How much does a driveway cost in Teesside? (2026)
A new driveway in Teesside costs £2,500–£6,500 for a typical two-car drive in 2026. Per square metre, supplied and laid: gravel £30–£65, tarmac £45–£85, block paving £70–£120, resin bound £70–£120, pattern imprinted concrete £85–£140. Groundworks, drainage and dropped kerbs are the costs that surprise people — all covered below.

What's actually in a driveway quote?
A proper quote is mostly groundworks. Of the total price of a typical Teesside drive, roughly 40–55% is excavation, sub-base and waste removal — the part you'll never see once it's finished. The surface material that everyone shops on is often less than half the cost. This is why two quotes for "the same" block-paved drive can differ by £1,500: one has 200mm of compacted Type 1 and a membrane, the other has a promise.
Every itemised quote should show: excavation and cart-away, sub-base type and depth, membrane, edge restraints, the surface material and laying, drainage works, and VAT. If any line is missing, ask for it in writing.
Per-material pricing, honestly assessed
Gravel — £30–£65/m²
The budget option and genuinely good value on the right property. Most of the spend is the sub-base and membrane; the stone itself is cheap. Add £8–£15/m² for stabilisation grids. Cheapest to install, cheapest to repair, but needs raking and top-ups.
Tarmac — £45–£85/m²
The value workhorse, and cheaper per metre as area grows. Watch for thin-lay pricing: a proper residential spec is a 50–60mm base course plus 20–25mm surface course. Block-paving edging adds £20–£35 per linear metre and is worth it.
Block paving — £70–£120/m²
Teesside's favourite. Standard concrete blocks at £70–£120/m², clay pavers £90–£150/m², permeable systems £90–£140/m². Intricate patterns and borders add labour time. Lifespan 20–30 years when the sub-base is honest.
Resin bound — £70–£120/m²
Price depends on aggregate choice and whether a sound base exists to overlay. Insist on UV-stable resin — the saving on non-UV is small and the failure is total. Permeable, so no planning permission needed on front gardens.
Pattern imprinted concrete — £85–£140/m²
The premium pour. Price includes colour, print mats, reinforcement and first seal. Add £150–£300 for resealing every 3–5 years. Groundwork spec is critical on Teesside clay — a cheap PIC job is a cracked PIC job.
The extras that inflate quotes
- Dropped kerb / vehicle crossing: council application fee plus construction by an approved contractor — typically £800–£1,800 all-in across the four Teesside boroughs. Long-lead item: apply first.
- Drainage: channel drains and a soakaway on non-permeable drives — £300–£800 depending on runs. On heavy clay the soakaway needs real sizing, not a token pit.
- Manhole and utility covers: recessing covers to take the new surface — £80–£150 each.
- Steps, walls and gates: priced separately; combine them into the same job to share excavation and skip costs.
- Access problems: no space for a grab lorry or skip adds labour and waste costs — mention access in your quote request.
How to compare quotes fairly
Three quotes, like-for-like, in writing. Compare the sub-base depth, the surface spec (block type / resin UV rating / tarmac course depths), drainage provision, waste removal, guarantee length and VAT — not the headline. The cheapest quote that omits groundworks is the most expensive driveway you'll ever buy: it just bills you later, in sinking and relaying. Our contractors are asked to quote itemised as standard.
Seasonal note for 2026: spring and summer diaries fill fastest on Teesside; late autumn quotes often keener, and ground conditions stay workable through most winters here.
