How much does a new driveway cost in Teesside?

A new driveway in Teesside typically costs £2,500 to £6,500 for a standard two-car drive (45 to 55m²), depending on the material. Built for Teesside ground, literally

Driveways fail from the bottom up, and Teesside's ground is unforgiving. Most of the conurbation sits on heavy glacial boulder clay: it drains poorly, shifts between wet winters and dry summers, and punishes any installer who skimps on the sub-base. Parts of central Middlesbrough and Stockton add made ground from the area's iron and chemical heritage on top of that.

That's why every quote we give specifies excavation depth and sub-base, not just the surface. A properly built Teesside drive means 150 to 200mm of compacted MOT Type 1 on a weed membrane (more on soft clay), with falls that move water away from your house, not towards it.

The drainage rule that catches people out

Since 2008, paving more than 5m² of a front garden with a non-permeable surface needs planning permission, unless rainwater drains to a lawn or border or you use a permeable material.
